Mayoral candidates Ron Kouchi and Bryan Baptiste are escorted by Kouchi’s wife Joy as the political opponents head up a field of 600 walkers at the Kaua’i United Way Walkathon early Saturday morning at Kukui Grove.

The walkers brought in an estimated $36,000 with that total expected to grow as pledges are redeemed. Some of the other notables in the field include Kura Hirokawa, one of the perennial walkers, and Alton Miyamoto of Kaua’i Electric representing the West Kaua’i Hongwanji Waimea Temple. The event was coordinated by the Kapa’a High School Interact Club.
