KOLOA – Princeville’s Kyle Barrett and Lihue’s Kane Edward won their respective divisions at the Kaua’i Junior Fall Open, a state-wide tennis tournament held in Koloa last weekend.
Edward routed Alex Matsuyama of Kailua 6-2, 6-2 in the Final Round of the Boys 18 singles division to take top honors. Matsuyama earlier defeated Koloa’s Kalaea Lake in the semifinal round, which erased an opportunity for an all-Kauaian 18 singles final round. Edward beat Holualoa’s Bryce Silva 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and ousted Wailuku’s Ryson Shiozuki 6-2, 6-1 before advancing to the finals.
Barrett had similar success. The Princeville resident won the Boys 14 singles after he defeated Kailua’s Riley Saito in the finals. Barrett passed through Aaron Tada 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinal round before advancing to the final match.
Kilauea’s Alex Latif came close to winning the Boys 16 singles title, but fell in the final round to Keaau’s Andy Narido 1-6, 1-6. Latif ousted Kailua’s Will Grosswendt 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the semifinal round before heading to the final match. Lihue’s Jordon Kukino made the semifinal round after ousting Honolulu’s Jon Okada 6-3, 7-5, but later lost to Narido in the semifinal round 1-6, 4-6.
Kukino would later team with Byce Silva of Holualoa to win the Boys 16 doubles match 6-2, 6-2 over the Hilo pair, Aaron Tada and Kevin Tamura.
Chas Okamoto of Kapa’a fell to Colby Ing 6-2, 6-4 in the Boys 10 singles division.
Brock Schleper of Kap’a fell to Ryan Ebisu of Aiea 0-6, 0-6 in the Boys 12 singles division. Mikaiaha Vea of Princeville fell to Niall Scully of Kailua 2-6, 1-6 in the same division.
In boys doubles, Mikaiah Vea teamed with Kailua’s Niall Scully but lost in the finals to Oahu’s Rvan Ebisu and Steven Yee. Latif and Barrett lost in the Boys 18 doubles to Narido and Matsuyama 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.
In Girls Matches – Cherine S. Ito of Lihue fell to Kelsey Wo 2-6, 1-6 in Girl’s 10 singles. Wo, of Honolulu, went on to win the division over Monique Melton of Waikoloa.
Kapa’a’s Lyndsey Tom fell to Hilo’s Stephanie Tadaki in the quarterfinals of the Girls’ 14 Singles. Cystine Ito of Lihue also competed in the division, falling to Kathryn Kawauchi of Hilo in the first round 2-6, 2-6. Janelle Arita won the division with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Page Samida.
The pairing of Ito and Lyndsey fell to the Hilo pair of Kawauchi and Tadaki in the Girls 14 doubles matchup.
Koloa’s Alex Sirois fell to Keri Sugiyama in a Girls 16 three set shootout. She was edged 6-7 (4), 7-5, 3-6. Erin Katayama (Kailua) defeated Christina Klein (Lahaina) 6-2, 6-2 for the division title. Sirois later teamed with Kristin Tremain of Kailua in Girls 16 doubles, and defeated the Honolulu pair of Amy Blackwell and Sugiyama 6-2, 6-1 to reach the finals. They lost to Katayama and Kristen Wo in the finals 0-6, 1-6.
