ELEELE – The Rookies wished it would all end in one fateful game, which would have avoided any more opportunities for the K-Makules to steal the title they’ve been successful defending for much of the 2002 season.
That wish took a detour on Saturday, as the K-Makules won the first playoff game 9-6 and forced an overall title bout which was played later in the day.
But just when the K-Makules rested the taste of glory at the tips of their toungues, the Rookies’ bats came alive. A repeat title was inevitable.
The Rookies topped the K-Makules 13-9 in the second game on Saturday to capture the 2002 Senior Softball Title in a bout for all the beans at Eleele Field.
The title will place the Rookies in the “A” division of the State Tournament, which will be held the first Wedneday of August (more information on the State Senior Softball Tourney will be provided in future editions of TGI). The K-Makules will travel in the “B” divison.
In the first game of the day, in which the K-Makules won 9-6, Dado Paiste recorded the win while Archie Fontanilla took the loss.
John Tabanair led the K-Makules with a homerun on two hits; Also with two hits were Herman Fraticille, Ernie Domingo, Doric Remata and Paiste.
The Rookies big sticks for the first game came from Wally Sonoda, who notched three hits, and Mitts Yamamoto, who had two.
In the second game, in which the Rookies won 13-9, Paiste was belted for 17 hits and 13 runs – he took the loss. Fontanilla pitched for the win.
For the Rookies, Ray Espino and Nellie Mendonca each had three hits apiece. All pairing hits were Wally Sonoda, Dickie Sialana, Fontanilla and Pat Baniaga.
The K-Makules’ Guy Ruiz socked a homer on two hits; Ernie Domingo had three hits and both Doric Remata and Herman Fraticille had two hits.
