This is the way sports were meant to be.
With only one week left to play in the Kaua’i Senior Softball League, three teams – the K Makules, the Rookies, and the Lihue A’s – are tied for the top spot in the second round, and no one is certain who will stand alone come the postseason.
In the first game played last Saturday at the Waimea Ball Field, the K-Makules scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap an 8-7 victory over West Kaua’i.
Down one in the sixth, with the bases loaded and with two outs on the board, Tiny Domingo thrashed a hit to centerfield which scored the two game-clinching runs.
West Kaua’i attempted to bounce back in the seventh.
With one out and the bases juiced, Bob Mercal hit a fly to center, which Doric Remata caught for the second out. The runner from third attempted to dash for the tying score but was picked off by a perfect Remata throw to home -the play abruptly ended West Kaua’i’s hopes for a win.
Big Sticks for the K-Makules: Lefty Remata, John Tabonair and “Big” Ben Pescador each had two hits.
Bukoski, who went 3-3 at the plate, was the losing pitcher; Paiste took the win.
Maxie Moreno and Ricky Carveiro each added two hits.
Lihue walked all over East Kaua’i 16-5 in the second game at Waimea.
