A full-time, professional home inspector, Scott W. Sauers of Princeville and Po’ipu has started Kauai Home Inspection for the purposes of providing buyers and sellers with a thorough understanding of the home they are buying or selling.
After 14 years in the business in California, he has inspected over 5,000 homes, and came to Kaua’i finally to live and open the business he says is needed on the island especially with all the new construction taking place.
A professional, full-time inspector who carries errors and omissions insurance, Sauers holds a general contractor’s license in California, and has trained other people to become home inspectors as well.
He said the full-time professional services of a home inspector should be preferred over the offerings of, say, a building contractor who does home inspections on the side.
In addition to generating business, he has as a goal making the home-inspection profession as professional as possible, he said.
A member of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) since 1991, and already an active member of the ASHI Hawai’i chapter, he is the first home inspector to join the Kauai Board of Realtors as an affiliate member, and remains a member of the California Real Estate Inspection Association.
The ASHI is a difficult society to get into, with only so many members allowed per state, he said. In California, he served as ASHI chapter president, secretary, treasurer, and membership chairman.
For buyers, Kauai Home Inspection provides a 14-page, easy-to-understand inspection report that meets or exceeds the standards of practice for ASHI.
The inspection report covers all of the major systems of a home, and buyers receive specific information on their home, which helps them understand areas that may need improvement, location of utility shut-offs, and positive aspects of their purchase.
The ASHI requires each inspector to maintain standards, a code of ethics, and continuing education as conditions of continued membership.
He plans to work out of his home. Living for now in Princeville, he and his family have purchased a home in the Weliweli subdivision of Po’ipu.
