Hot footing it all the way to Hanalei

The Hardrock 100 it is not, but last weekend the Hanalei Civic Canoe Club staged its 22nd running of the Ha’ena to Hanalei 8-mile foot race.

Except for two hills in the latter half of the race, the course skirts Kaua’i’s North Coast at rolling sea level. One does not, however, go from the couch to the starting line without preparation.

Even at the 7am van-honking start signal, the thermometer read 77 degrees – and climbing quickly. With no mercy for the unconditioned sports enthusiast, the race sees the first wave of jackrabbit runners reduced to being pedestrians after three miles. By the time runners reached the crest of hill near l east of Wainiha, some were leaving their morning croissants behind.

From Waikoko Beach to Black Pot Pier, two flat miles of “kick”, the disciplined runners cut loose, leaving the pack behind in the still hot air.

Most of the over 150 participants were happy to pace themselves down Weke Road’s straight-a-way, saving their kick until they could see the orange coned finish line.

A delicious Club breakfast awaited everyone as soon as they could recompose their appetite. Numerous volunteers labored speedily to answer the demand.

The Club and its numerous sponsors gather many nice people together for an enjoyable awards breakfast. The runner “singlets” and prized wooden bowls make great souvenirs of a fun June First.

If anyone missed the race this year, don’t miss it next year. It’s never too late to run your way into the record “highs”.
