A contingent of over 60 Kaua’i surfers made their mark at the annual Hawai’i Amateur Surfing Association’s Town & Country State Championships. Some 200 surfers competed in the contest, which had 27 competition divisions.
The top-finishing Kaua’i surfer was Chris Satterfield, who took first place in the mens open division.
The Kaua’i surfers were chosen according to their record in competition over the past year in Kaua’i meets. Local meet director Nelson Togioka helped organize and arrange transportation for the Kaua’i contingent who traveled to the meet.
The surf meet was held last weekend on the South Shore of O’ahu, at the surf breaks Ala Moana Bowl and Kewalo Basin. Surf ran from two to five feet.
All finalists qualified to compete in the United States Surfing Federation National Championships, which are scheduled for July 20-26 at Oceanside, Calif.
Part-time Kaua’i resident Alana Brennan won the girls surfing division. Bethany Hamilton had a strong showing in the division, taking third with a free-fall take-off on a larger wave.
Andy Melamed of KONG radio in Lihu’e provided live updates from the contest for Kaua’i listeners throughout the weekend meet.
Melamed provided The Garden Island with the results for top Kaua’i finishers.
