Put one in the record books for double medal winners Blue Dolphins Girls U12 & U14 Soccer Champions.
In last week’s Kauai Soccer Association championship games, the Blue Dolphins under 12 girls team won not only the championship in their own age division, but also clinched the under 14 division championship.
Head Coach Gary Towner and Asst. Coach Ron Terry decided to enter the girls in the u14 division with hopes of getting his team used to more physical and aggressive play, without high expectations.
As the season went on he realized the extend of the girls’ abilities, and the thought of making it to the playoffs did cross his mind.
But the coaches and parents never thought of the girls as being the u12 and u14 champions in the same season, which makes it all the more memorable for the Blue Dolphins.
Following a season of hard work and determination, the Blue Dolphins were rewarded with a 3-1 victory over the Westide girls in the Under 14 championship game.
In the semifinal action, the Blue Dolphins met top seed Eastside Girls and came from behind to tie the game 2-2 before the end of regulation. This resulted in a shoot-out that went down to a final shot for the Eastside Girls in the exciting “Major League Soccer” style of ending.
Blue Dolphin’s keeper Natasha Acosta blocked four of five attempts and the Dolphins pulled off the upset.
The Blue Dolphins’ high speed attack was led all season by forwards Laurelle Rosare, Kristen Shim and Jaezelle Balilea. They and center midfielder Sanoe Souza, who ripped a 30-yard score, accounted for all playoff goals in their u14 playoff games.
Awesome midfield play by Kailie Shiba and Corey Mann helped keep the Dolphins within striking distance throughout the season.
In the u12 championship game, the Blue Dolphins were 8-0 winners over the up-and-coming Shooting Stars.
Shaye Donnelly, Skye Shimabukuro and Cayla Kitabayashi played key rolls in the game.
The Blue Dolphins’ tough defense allowed only 2 goals throughout the season while offense scored an incredible 80 goals, which resulted in an undefeated season.
The team was anchored by sweeper Chaslee Delanoza and was supported with outstanding performances by fullbacks Stacy Terry and Mona Schimmelfennig, along with stopper Zoe Finn and keeper Caitlin Towner.
