The Ocean Safety Bureau of the Kauai Fire Department will be conducting it’s Junior Lifeguard Program at various sites between June 10 and July 26, 2002.
Boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 18 are encouraged to participate in the program, which will teach lifesaving skills including CPR, and provide extensive training in water safety. In order to participate, you must be able to run and swim 100 yards non-stop.
“Lifeguarding is a very humane act that everyone should learn and practice,” says County Lifeguard Randy Ortiz. “Knowing what to do, when to do it, how to perform, why this is done and where to administer aid is the basis for successful lifesaving.”
To receive a certificate, the participants must complete a 20-hour course at one of the following locations:
Salt Pond June 10-14
Po’ipu June 24-28
Kalapaki July 1-5
Anahola July 8-12
Hanalei July 22-26
Classes are conducted Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants should provide their own lunch and equipment (if available). There will be a final competition among all participants on Saturday, July 27, at Kalapaki Beach.
To register call Randy Ortiz at 635-5962, or Roy Yamagata at 635-7381.
