On Sunday May 5, 117 One Man (OC-1) and Two Man (OC-2) canoes set out from Kaluakoi, Molokai to Magic Island, Oah- for the Starbucks Molokai relay.
Teams of two paddlers (OC-1) and four paddlers (OC-2) compete in this unique relay race. The race was won by the team of Kai Bartlett and Aaron Napoleon in the record time of 4:30.26.
Kai was raised on Kaua’i and his parents Tom and Mary, who live in Kalaheo, were on his escort boat assisting and cheering.
Kauai Hoe Waa will be hosting a paddling clinic this saturday, may 11, 2002 at 3:00 pm at kalapaki beach. all interested canoe paddlers and the public are invited to this free clinic.
The clinic will be led by Kai Bartlett of Kai Wa’a Canoes and Jim Foti of Hurricane Canoes. these two are recognized as two of the top paddlers in hawaii.
The clinic will be for all levels of paddler with emphasis on beginner to intermediate paddlers. participants are urged to bring their canoes.
This is a great opportunty for Kauai paddlers to meet and learn from some of the top paddlers in the sport.
On May 8, the Kaua’i hoe wa’a, Kaua’i’s one and two man canoe association, will be holding their 2002 kauai championships this sunday, may 12, 2002.
The season sponsors have been eyecatcher sunglasses and the YMCA. The sponsors for this race are Kai Wa’a canoes and Hurricane Canoes.
The long course is from kalapaki beach to port allen. Registration starts at 8:30 am at Kalapaki beach and the race starts at 10:00 am.
Short course is from poip- to port allen.
Registration starts at 10:00 am at the Sheraton Beach Park in F Lot and the race starts at 11:00 pm
Lunch and awards will be at Port Allen following the race.
