Hanapepe – With storm clouds overhead, the Waimea Menehunes continued their lightning bolt streak through their KIF counterparts with an 11-4 KIF regular season-ending victory over the Kapa’a Warriors on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon at Hanapepe Ball Park.
With Shawn Yadao penciled in for his first start of the season – Coach Kui Souza continued to utilize the starting lineup that has now swept through the second round of play unscathed at 6-0 (10-4 overall).
Yadao, whose only previous mound appearance was a limited 2/3-inning closing stint against the Red Raiders on March 30, put the Warriors down in order to start the contest.
Before fans of both squads had a chance to settle in their folding chairs along the sidelines, Waimea sent 13 men to the plate and erupted for 9 first-inning runs on 3 hits, 4 walks, 2 hit batters and 3 Kapa’a defensive errors.
Clarence Aki tripled off Warrior hurler Dustin Mundon to start the frame and Michael Ishibashi was hit by an errant offering to put runners on the corners. As Ishibashi stole second, Aki scampered home on a throwing error for the games initial run. Brandon Ishibashi walked and was replaced by Andres Emayo on the base paths. Robin Correa was also plunked to load the bags and a follow-up walk to Mark Ruiz allowed Ishibashi to cross the dish. Jay Parinas singled through the right side to plate Emayo for a 3-0 Menehune lead and a Zenon Schonberg base on balls to bring home Correa spelled the end of Mundons pitching chores.
J.J. Ancheta took the hill in relief and struck out Cacal before consecutive errors allowed Ruiz, Parinas and Schonberg to score. Brandon Ishibashi, in contention the league batting title, singled through the right side to drive in Kane Zalopany and Aki to put the home team ahead 9-0.
The Warriors got a pair back in the fourth when Anchetas two-out double to the left center field gap knocked in courtesy runner Clesson Hiranaka (aboard for Kyle Neuberger who singled) and Mundon (hit by pitch).
Waimea picked up their final runs in the home half of the fifth on Warrior defensive miscues.
Kapa’a plated two runs in the sixth without benefit of a base hit. An infield throwing error and 2 hit batters filled the bases before Ancheta drew a base on balls to pick up his third RBI. Two outs later Matt Isoda was unintentionally plunked to plate Brad Wakuta for an 11-4 deficit.
Robin Correa started the final frame in relief of Yadao and was rudely greeted with a Kaili Panui double to left. Correa quickly got the next two hitters out on called third strikes before Mundon’s bloop single to right fell in to score Panui for the contests final tally.
Yadao evened his record to 1-1 on the season while Mundon, who saw his initial start on the hill quickly end, picked up the loss.
Kalen Laranio pitched effectively over the games final three innings for the Warriors and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on only 1 hit and 4 walks (with 2 strikeouts).
The first round champ Warriors, who fell to 7-6 overall, and 3-3 in second round action will host second round titlist Waimea in the KIF league championship game on Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m. at Ron Martin Field on the Kapa’a campus.
