The Kaua’i Red Raiders are only one win away from capturing the 2002 KIF Junior Varsity Title.
The Raiders (5-1) stormed the Waimea Menehunes (4-2) 48-30 on Saturday, taking sole possession of first in the KIF standings and needing just one win over the Kapa’a Warriors on Tuesday to call themselves champs.
Despite what the final scoreboard read, Waimea didn’t just hand the game over.
The Menehunes got two buckets under the hoop from Randi-Raynasha Ortiz and allowed no Red Raider field goals to take a 9-4 lead in the first quarter.
Starlene Kelekoma sparked a Raider run.
She scored seven of her team leading 12 points in the second quarter, along with a crucial steal and assist, to give Kaua’i an 18-16 lead at the half.
The Raiders sailed the rest of the way. They outscored the Menehunes 30-14 in the second half, and have now heightened their chances at winning a KIF Junior Varsity Championship.
The Menehunes had 11 turnovers in the game; The Red Raiders had eight steals.
