The second round of the KIF girls basketball season began with Kaua’i’s April 17 win over Waimea.
Sportswriter Manny Henriques will have to tell me this fact a thousand times before it actually registers in one of my stories.
The win Saturday night improvethe Kaua’i Red Raiders to 2-1 on the season, and the Menehunes fall to 1-2. The Kapa’a Warriors remain at 1-1, and will play two more games – Tuesday vs. Kaua’i at Bernice Hundly, Friday vs. Waimea at Clem Gomes – to complete the regular season.
The scenario:
Kaua’i can win second round Tuesday
– The Kaua’i Red Raiders can clinch the second round with a win on Tuesday. That would push their record to 3-1, and Waimea and Kapa’a would face each other in the final game Friday with 1-2 records. In that situation, the Menehunes will be bumped from championship contention and Kaua’i would face Kapa’a for the title (location and time TBA). If the Red Raiders lose on Tuesday, they are still alive with a 2-2 record as long as the Waimea Menehunes beat the Warriors on Friday.
Waimea needs Kapa’a to win one,
then lose one
– The Waimea Menehunes hope the Warriors can beat the Red Raiders on Tuesday. If Kapa’a wins, the Menehunes are still in it. They can even up the records with a win over the Warriors Friday and force a three-way playoff for second round honors. (location of playoffs and championship game TBA).
Warriors two wins from KIF Title
– The Warriors don’t want this season to go past Friday. All they have to do is win. If they beat Kaua’i on Tuesday and Waimea on Friday, this season is over, and they are the KIF Champs.
