ASP Int’l, QLD, Australia – Beginning next Monday, April 15, the spotlight of world professional surfing will head to the remote and powerful coastline of southern Western Australia for the 6-Star World Qualifying Series (WQS) Salomon Masters at Margaret River.
The event then runs through to Sunday, April 21, when the 2002 champion will be decided.
The quality of Margaret River’s wave sees the Salomon Masters holding a ‘Prime’ rating, automatically adding a 10 percent bonus to qualifying points, making the tournament even more important for the worlds leading surfers.
This years field is testament to the events importance on a global scale – 256 surfers from over 15 different countries, plus both reigning World Championship Tour (WCT) champions: CJ Hobgood (USA) and four-time consecutive title holder Layne Beachley (Aus).
Add to this, current WCT rating’s leader Andy Irons (Kau), fellow WCT surfers Russell Winter (UK), South African’s Greg Emslie and Paul Canning, Brazilians Flavio Padaratz and Renan Rocha, and Joel Parkinson will contest the Salomon Masters.
Mark Occhilupo, Jake Paterson, Luke Egan, and Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning (Aus), who used the victory as a springboard for his amazing campaign on the WQS that resulted in his overall series crowning.
