The Waimea Menehunes and Kapa’a Warriors split their double-header at Hanapepe Saturday, giving each team its first win of the KIF season.
The Menehunes dip to 1-3 on the season; the Warriors start with a 1-1 record.
In the first game, Waimea jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t hold off a Kapa’a onslaught in the seventh. Kapa’a scored five runs in the final inning and topped the Menehunes 7-4.
Warrior pitcher Kyle Newberger (1-0) notched the win; Sean Yadao got the loss (0-1). Kai Lopez, who got himself out of serious trouble in the bottom of the seventh, claimed the save.
Kaili Panui went 1-4 with two RBI’s (on a home-run to leftfield). Bradley Wakuta went 1-1 with two RBI’s.
The Menehunes came back in the second game to take Kapa’a 4-2 and win their first game of the KIF season.
Clarence Aki (1-1) notched the win for Waimea; Kai Lopez got the loss (0-1).
Waimea’s 1-0 first inning lead was nixed by a Newberger sacrifice fly to score Keoni Nakano. Kapa’a extended the lead to 2-1 before the sixth inning, but Waimea’s three-run, sixth inning splash at the bottom of the sixth gauranteed the Menehunes their first win.
Mark Ruiz’ single to right scored Zenon Schonberg and Levi Maeda, and he would later score on a Kapa’a error to seal the deal for the Menehunes.
