Also on Saturday night, most of the members from the Kauai High School mock trial team returned home after capturing their sixth consecutive state title by beating out Kalani High School in the final competition on Saturday.
Michael Ratcliff, one of three lawyer coaches for the group, noted that this gives Kauai High School seven state titles in the last ten years.
The road to the state title involved Kaua’i having to nail down the Kaua’i title by bettering both Waimea and Kapa’a high schools during the year, and getting past Pahoa High School from the Big Island in the semi-finals. The championship team will be leaving for the national competition in St. Paul, Minnesota from May 10-12, and plans for fundraisers are already underway to help offset the costs of making the trip to the nationals.
Members of the championship team, some of whom have been part of the team since their freshman year, include Leilani Bailey, Lauren Calhoun, Maggi Celebrano, Davin Costa, Taylor Finley, Amy Hutchinson, Kim Kido, Chase Lamadrid, Eise Martin, Margo Matias, Stephen McClaran, Harlee Rajczyk, Travis Rollins, Kellie Rauboro, Sasha Sagadraca, Nicole Sagum, Alex Sirois, Matt Stoltz, Kimberly Torigoe, Mike Tsugawa, Bill Wright, and Parris Zina.
Lawyer coaches include Ratcliff, Aric Fujii, and Ted Chihara. Teacher coaches are Dorothy Hoe and Sharyl Matias.
