The suitcase nobody wanted at the airport in Lihu’e last Saturday turned out to be ice cold.
DEA officials in Honolulu said yesterday that the suitcase contained approximately 80 grams of ice.
Kaua’i County prosecutor Mike Soong said the estimated street value of an 80 gram parcel is currently between $8,000 and $12,000.
The bag was put on the San Francisco to Lihu’e United non-stop flight Saturday morning by a baggage handler who claimed he was doing a favor for a co-worker.
But once the helpful baggage handler thought about what he had done, he told his manager.
Police in California notified police here while the plane was in the air, and when the bag arrived, it was checked for explosives and drugs without being opened, according to local officials.
The bag was then placed with other luggage and police waited to see who picked it up.
But nobody claimed it.
The bag was then taken to O’ahu earlier this week by federal officers who opened it and discovered the drugs.
Federal officials said charges against the baggage handler are likely.
