American Airlines announced the daily nonstop service on Tuesday.
American Airlines already flies nonstop from Mainland airports to Honolulu, Wailuku/Kahului on Maui, and to Kailua-Kona’s Keahole Airport on the Big Island.
The new flight is in addition to two daily nonstop United Airlines flights from the Mainland already landing at Lihu’e Airport. American plans to use a 176-seat Boeing 757 to carry passengers from Los Angeles to Lihu’e. United uses Boeing 757s configured for 182-seat capacity.
American Airlines said the new nonstop flight is part of the company’s post-Sept. 11 recovery efforts. New flights are also being added to the New York City area and other markets with American service. The company lost aircraft on Sept. 11 and suffered major financial problems following the terrorist attack.
