Over 70 select soccer teams converged on the new Waipio Soccer Complex on Oahu over the President’s Day weekend to compete for 12 titles in the 2002 Hawaii Tide American Cup Tournament. National Soccer Academy’s Magic ’90 Girls Under 12 team swept all competitors and won the highly competitive Under 12 division title for the third year in a row.
Kapa’a’s Mari Punzal, (kneeling in the second row, far left) a defensive specialist for the NSA Magic ’90 Girls Team, allowed just one goal in the tournament championship game, in which they won 2-1. In the second game of the tourney, due to prior commitments, NSA ’90 played with only 10 players, and still managed to win 3-0. The daughter of Eugene and Laurie Punzal, Mari is an honor student at Kapa’a Middle School and credits her local coaches Ed Kunioka-Volz, Maria Burns, and Kevin Devitt for the fine-tuning of her soccer skills.
