Nelson Secretario, a Kapa’a insurance agent who served one term on the Kaua’i County Council from 1996 to 1998, is running for state representative in the newly-formed 14th House District which covers the North Shore of Kaua’i down to the north end of Kapa’a.
Secretario, a Republican, took out nomination papers Monday for the seat whose constituency stretches from the North Shore to Kapa’a.
A Democrat, Mina Morita, is the current representative for the old 12th House District, and represents North Kaua’i and East Maui including remote Hana.
Secretario was defeated in the 1998 election in his attempt to serve a second council term. He hasn’t run for public office since then.
Picking up nomination papers is one of the first formal steps in running for office in the 2002 election. Prospective candidates have until July 23 to file, unless they are running for Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee, in which case they have a Sept. 6 deadline.
The primary election will be held Sept. 21, followed by the general election Nov. 5.
