WAIMEA – Ryan Cram’s putback (of an errant Austin Rosa trey attempt) at the final buzzer lifted the Kapa’a Warriors to a thrilling 44-42 victory over the Menehunes in the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation boys junior varsity season finale Friday night.
The lead changed hands nine times as both offenses worked patiently and deliberately throughout the contest.
Two Devin Machado field goals helped offset the long distance shooting of Waimea’s Jeremy Manuel and Akeem Allen in the opening period as both teams battled to a 10-10 draw.
Kapa’a’s 1-2-2 zone shut out the home team from the field in the second period, as Waimea failed to connect on 8 shot attempts. Although the Menehunes made 10 of 15 free throws (led by Andres Emayos 5 of 6) to take a 20-18 lead into the locker room, Kapa’a was able to pull out the win in the final half.
The win lifted the Warriors to a 2-5 regular season finish while Waimea ended in second place with a record of 3-4.
Ten Raiders Get Into Scoring Column
KAPAA – With the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys junior varsity basketball crown freshly wrested from the west-side, Coach Buzzy Cox’s Raiders opened Tuesday evening’s tilt at the Bernice Hundley Gym clicking on all cylinders.
Utilizing fresh legs and a lightning-quick full court trap, Kaua’i opened the contest with an 11-0 run and 17-4 first quarter bulge. With Kekoa Crowell nailing baseline jumpers, Futi Tavana controlling the paint, and Max Hadwin perfect from the line, each contributed 4 points to the initial Raider run.
Ryan Cram led all scorers with 12 points while Crowell and Hadwin (who saved his finest offensive performance for his squads last contest) shared a team-high 8 points each for the victorious Red Raiders. Tavana skied for a game-high 5 blocks in leading Kauais impressive defensive effort.
The victory ends Kaua’i’s championship season at 6 wins and 2 losses, with the regular season finale between Kapa’a (1-5) and Waimea (3-3) set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Clem Gomes Gymnasium.
