Waimea 9, Kaua’i 1
Bridget Louis went 3-4 with three RBIs and Jamie “Tia” Koerte drove in four runs–a loud testament to the hot bats that fired 12 hits for the Waimea Menehunes, who swamped Kaua’i 9-1 in the first game of yesterday’s softball double-header.
Waimea ace Albette Nawai (2-0) clinched the win in four innings, allowing two-hits from 15 Red Raider at-bats. Nawai also recorded two swinging K’s and two walks before being replaced by Lynette Perreira in the fifth, who faired almost as well.
The Menehunes broke on to the scoreboard in the first inning, recording two RBIs–one from Louis, who sent Melissa Moreno home, and another from Koerte, who scored Louis.
A three-and-out led the Menehunes to a 2-0 lead going into the bottom second, where Ann “Keiao” Gucwa Bucasas drove in Perreira, who tripled earlier in the order.
Nawai again stifled any Red Raider production in the third, which led to another two Menehune runs–another RBI single from Louis, scoring Ashley Mier, and a similar RBI from Koerte, who sent Louis home.
Kaua’i was able to score in the fifth after an error brought Bailey Azeka home from third, but it wasn’t enough offensive production leading into the sixth, where the Menehunes poured it on.
In a four-hit, four-run, two-walk inning for Waimea, Alexys Nawai, Destinie “Maka” Keamoai, Louis, Erin Castillo, Perreira and Koerte each got on base to cap the most productive offensive outing of the day for the Menehunes, who ran away with a 9-1 victory and a 3-0 record before the second game.
Waimea 5, Kaua’i 2
The Kaua’i faired much better defensively against the Menehunes in the second game of yesterday’s double-header, but the Red Raiders had to face both Bridget Louis (2-0) and Albette Nawai (2 saves) on the mound, which hindered their chances of scoring runs down the stretch.
The Menehunes (4-0) would get the 5-2 victory, making it clear that a playoff in highly unlikely come New Year’s Eve.
Louis allowed three hits and two walks in four innings (one unearned run), and Nawai ended the fifth with the batters juiced to eventually earn her a second save against the Red Raiders this season.
Waimea scored two-runs in two innings to take a 2-0 lead before the third–one on an RBI right-field floater from Ann “Keiao” Gucwa Bucasas to drive in Erin Castillo, and the other a triple from Louis to send Ashley Meir home.
Kaua’i responded in the fifth, when Kainoa Dejos’ single scored Shannon Perreira. But even after three Waimea errors and leaving the bases juiced for two consecutive at-bats, the Red Raiders could only notch one run on the scoreboard.
The Menehunes got two runs in the fifth–one on a two-error infield blunder that scored pinch runner Veronica Kanahele, and another on a sacrifice RBI from Louis that sent Meir home for the second time in the game.
Ashley Nonaka hit an RBI single to give Shannon Perreira a run in the sixth, but that was all the Red Raiders could get in terms of scoring for the remainder of the game.
Waimea’s Mier notched a sac-fly which sent Gucwa Bucasas home in the sixth, and the Menehunes would finish the game with a 5-2 win and a perfect record before Christmas.
