The Kaua’i Red Raider boy’s soccer team came off an undefeated run on the Big Island. Waimea lacked some key players who were attending an awards meeting for the finale of the football season.
Either excuse might have contributed to the Red Raiders’ 4-0 drubbing of the Waimea Menehunes last night at Vidinha Stadium.
The Red Raiders were coming in with some experience. The Menehunes came in short of players and into a muddy mess on Lihue’s premiere soccer field.
At any rate, the action picked up halfway through the first period.
Kaua’i’s Mason Chan, who looked impressive all night for the Red Raiders, knocked in a left corner blast to put his team up 1-0.
Chan didn’t stop there.
He nailed a header to the top right corner of the net-sent to him from a graciously accurate corner kick, and the Red Raiders took a 2-0 lead at the half.
Waimea put James Marques in the goal in the second period.
He showed his athleticism with a number of out-of-the box saves. But “leaving your home” is a major goalie no-no, and Marques would suffer the consequences.
Kaua’i’s Kevin Baron squeaked one past the Menehune goalie for the third score of the game, and Kalen Carveiro would score, moments later, in similar fashion.
“It was a definite advantage for us to have played on the Big Island before the start of the season,” said Red Raider Coach Mark Brandeburg. “Overall, I think this team has been playing extremely well…especially since it is only the start to the season. We are playing extremely well as a team.”
