Dana Romsdal, jewelry designer and partner of Goldsmiths Kaua’i, recently won a design award for her pendant “Timeless.” She entered the creation in the diamond jewelry category at the Hawai’i Jewelers Association’s annual fall design competition.
Romsdal often draws on themes in nature, abundant on Kaua’i, to come up with ideas for her works. “Timeless” is based in part on the geometric shapes of crystal formations.
Set in 18-karat yellow gold and platinum, the piece features three princess-cut diamonds totaling 2.03 carats. Contest criteria required the use of three different size diamonds, all of the same shape, to signify the past, present and future.
The name of the piece came naturally, she said: “When one thinks about it, diamonds are timeless.” She explained that princess-cut diamonds are square or slightly rectangular in shape, with full brilliant faceting for maximum sparkle.
The competition was judged by Bart Boydston of DeBeers, David Peters of Jewelers of America, and KITV Channel 4’s Paula Young, and was sponsored by DeBeers Diamond Promotion Service.
A jewelry designer on Kaua’i for more than 20 years, Romsdal often gets her inspiration from the world around her: waves, rocks, seashells, coral, and lava.
“Nature has such a myriad of symmetry and art,” she said. She enjoys making those shapes and forms into wearable designs. “There are rock forms in Waimea Canyon that I’m inspired by, as well as the shapes of tropical plants, leaves and flowers.”
Romsdal said she was recently walking near the ocean, watching waves crashing, fascinated by the striations in the sea foam. “I was thinking, ‘How do I translate this into metal?’ “
She has won numerous jewelry design contests in Hawai’i, and in international competitions. One of four jewelry designers at Goldsmiths Kaua’i, Romsdal enjoys designing jewelry that can last through the millennia.
