Nearly 120 Kaua’i students in grades one through 12, from public, private and home-schools, entered the annual Solipsys Kaua’i poster and essay contest that offered scholarships as prizes. The theme was how technology can help the Hawaiian islands in the future. The students recommended technical solutions to enhance the lives of Hawai’i’s citizens and grow its industries. Solipsys is a high-tech company with Kaua’i offices in Waimea and Lihu’e.
The winners of the 2001 Kauai Island Scholarship Contest were Zia Ray, grade three, Happy Family Home School, for her poster, “Energy is Everywhere.” Raphael Escalona, a St. Cathernie School fifth grader, won for his essay, “Solar-Powered Air Tubes,” and eighth grader Bryan Wardlow of Kapa’a Middle School won his grade division for his essay, “Hydrogen Energy Research.” Joshua Miyamoto, a junior at Kaua’i High School, won his division with the essay, “Expanding Technology to Allow for Faster Industrial Development.”
