The Coconut Marketplace, Waipouli location of Liberty House closed its doors without fanfare, as new owners Macy’s and new Liberty House parent Federated Department Stores, Inc. said it would.
And, as planned, the three Waipouli employees were offered positions at the Kukui Grove location.
Now, for all those people who wanted to get a step ladder and rip down those temporary Liberty House covers to get a look at the new Macy’s signs everyone knows are underneath on the exterior of the store, the wait is nearly over.
Macy’s formally launches in Hawai’i this Friday, Nov. 23, with the Kukui Grove blessing at 6:45 a.m., and the store opening at 7 a.m.
Special commemorative slippers which imprint the word “Macy’s” in the sand when you walk on the beach will be given to all customers who spend $25 or more in the store that day, while supplies last.
A special Curious George Macy’s plush toy will be available for $16.95 with a minimum $35 purchase. Macy’s will donate $5 from every purchase of the toys to The Nature Conservancy of Hawai’i, hoping to raise $10,000 for the nonprofit organization.
Like the slippers offer, the toy is available only while supplies last.
Effective now through Jan. 2, 2002, customers can help feed the state’s hungry people by purchasing $1 and $5 coupons at registers in the home, women’s and men’s departments of the store.
With $1, over $20 in grocery items can be provided by the Hawai’i Foodbank, while a $5 donation allows that organization to distribute over $100 in groceries to the state’s hungry.
The name change from Liberty House to Macy’s also heralds changes in apparel and other goods the store will offer. Expect more hip clothing for young people, and other additions in home furnishings and other areas of the store, Macy’s people promise.
