Kaua’i residents have inquired about being blood donors.
Kauaians wondering when they can donate blood for victims of the terrorist attacks will get their chance next month.
Blood Bank of Hawai’i will conduct blood drives here Oct. 17 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Oct. 18 at Kaua’i War Memorial Convention Hall (8 a.m.-4 p.m.) and Oct. 19 at Kaua’i Community College (8 a.m.-3 p.m.).
Lani Yukimura, spokesman for Wilcox Memorial, said many Kaua’i residents have contacted the hospital inquiring about being blood donors.
Next month’s blood drives here are part of an earlier schedule. Donors can request by calling the blood bank at 1-800-372-9966.
More than 500 people went to the Blood Bank of Hawai’i headquarters in Honolulu and donaterd 407 pints of blood Tuesday, the day of the terrorist attacks. It was a record combined blood draw for the organization. The previous record for a single day was 307 pints at an Oahu location in November 1999.
“The need for blood will continue over an extended period of time and we encourage people to call to make an appointment to donate over the next few weeks,” said Dr. Robyn Yim, president of the blood bank.
The blood bank is a member of America’s Blood Centers, a network of 75 independent blood centers that collects half the nation’s blood supply. Once local needs are met, surplus units will be distributed to the East Coast.
Yim said companies and organizations that want to schedule a blood drive should call the blood bank.
