In hot, humid Pennsylvania conditions, Kaua’i’s Katherine Cadiente
became the best 10-year-old standing long jumper in the country.
The Wilcox Elementary student leaped 6-feet, 11-inches from a
standstill to claim the 9-10 year-old standing long jump gold medal
at the Hershey Youth Program National Track and Field Meet in
Hershey, Penn., Saturday.
The distance was a full three inches farther than Cadiente had ever jumped.
Cadiente and six other Hawai’i youngsters traveled to Pennsylvania on
Wednesday for the meet. The Hershey meet is the largest of its kind
in the country. Over 400,000 kids from 3,000 communities participated
this year.
Katherine wasn’t the only Cadiente competing. Brother Kevin, 14,
placed sixth overall in the 13-14 200-meter run. He ran the distance
in 26.14 seconds, not quite his all-time best.
The brother/sister combination took Hawai’i by storm in a July state
meet that was used to determine who would qualify for the Hershey
national competition.
The Hawai’i youngsters competed as part of the Pacific Southwest
Regional Team – comprised of California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawai’i.
