The Hawai’i Government Employees Association mountainball season kicked off last Tuesday, July 24.
Games are being played on Tuesday and Thursday from now until August 28. There are six teams competing for the Kaua’i championship. At the end of the season, there will be an inter-island competition.
Here are the results of the July 24 and Thursday, July 26 contests.
Tuesday
Hana Hou 18, Na Kolohe 6
Hana Hou began the HGEA mountainball league with a bang, scoring 12 runs in the first half inning of play. The outburst was too much for Na Kolohe to handle, as Hana Hou cruised to a 18-6 victory.
Paris Resinto was the winning pitcher. Norman Holt Jr. suffered the loss. The teams combined for 33 hits.
Don Ouderkirk led Hana with six RBI on a single and a triple. Randy Riggin smacked two singles and two doubles on his way to four RBI. Jeff Hashimoto had two singles and a triple, as well as two RBI. Todd Yamase smacked three singles and had a RBI.
Hank Ibia banged two singles for Na Kolohe and had two RBI. The rest of Na Kolohe’s hits were singles. Ryan Waalani had three. Holt Jr., Hoku Cup Choy, Rovan Poai and Glenn Morita had two apiece.
KFD 14, Nogi’s 9
Nogi’s got out to a 3-1 lead after one inning, but couldn’t hold off the Kaua’i Fire Department team.
Gregg Morishige picked up the win. Kyle Nakagawa suffered the loss. The teams combined for 36 hits.
Corey Sakai led KFD with a home run and two singles. He had three RBI. Dodd Apao also drove home three runs on two singles. John Blaylock had two singles, a triple and a RBI. Clinton Fujii smacked three singles. Daryl Date had two singles. Jason Ornellas had a single and two RBI.
All of Nogi’s hits were singles. Nakagawa had three. Blaine Nakano, Mel Yamase, Ronnie Matsumura, Gordon Tamura and Scott Ebesu had two each.
Kathleen Glass 9, Custom Limo 3
Custom scored all three of its runs in the first inning, then watched as Kathleen Glass took over.
Lance Nakata picked up the win. Lambert Alapai suffered the loss. The teams combined for 22 hits.
Wendell Nonaka had two singles and two RBI for Kathleen Glass. Kelly Robinson had a single, a triple and an RBI. David Oshiro drove in two runs with his single. Leroy Nonaka had a single, a double and a RBI. John Shishido and Vince Nitta had two singles.
Wendell Gabriel had a triple and a RBI for Custom. Kea Kanealii had a double.
Thursday
Custom Limo 17, Nogi’s 3
Lambert Alapai picked up the win, as Custom Limo evened its mountainball record at 1-1. Nogi’s dropped to 0-2 as Kyle Nakagawa suffered the loss on the mound. The teams combined for 25 hits.
Frank Bukoski nearly hit for the cycle for Custom. He hit a single, double and triple and knocked in four runs. Steven Carvalho had two singles and two RBI. Wesley Kaui had a single and two RBI. Timmy Laranio had a single and a double. Derek Rapozo managed the same. Destry Carvalho had three singles.
Blaine Nakano led Nogi’s with two singles. Nakagawa had a double.
Kathleen Glass 12, Na Kolohe 3
Kathleen moved to 2-0 on the season as Lance Nakata picked up his second win. Na Kolohe moved to 0-2; Rich Waalani suffered the loss. The teams combined for 26 hits, 21 of which belonged to Kathleen Glass.
Davis Oshiro had four singles and a RBI. Garrett Agena smacked three singles and had two RBI. Vince Nitta had three singles. Nakata, Hughes Ebinger and Royce Ijima had two singles each.
Waalani had a double and three RBI for Na Kolohe.
KFD 6, Hana Hou 5
In the tightest contest to date, KFD used a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to move to 2-0 on the year and hand Hana its first loss.
Gregg Morishige picked up his second win for KFD. Paris Resinto suffered his first loss. The teams managed 22 hits between them.
Daryl date drove in the wining run for KFD on one of his two singles. Dodd Apao had a single and a double. Clinton Fujii and Mike Scovel had two singles each.
Don Ouderkirk had a single and a double for Hana Hou. He had two RBI. Vernon Parangao had two singles. Richard Rosa banged a double.
