The Rookies’ unbeaten streak has ended.
The dominant team in the Kaua’i Senior Citizen Softball League was finally unseated last Saturday at Isenberg Field. West Kaua’i made it happen with a 17-5 victory, as pitcher Joe Silva held the hard-hitting Rookies to their lowest run total of the season on just 12 total hits.
Meanwhile, his teammates got to Rookies pitcher Archie Fontanilla for 17 runs on 24 hits.
West Kaua’i’s Bobby Rita got a two-run home run on two hits. Both Henry Vales and Danny Manus banged solo homers on two hits as well. Bob Merkel pounded out a two-run home run of his own, and Boni Garma got three hits.
Nelly Mendonca smacked two home runs on two hits for the Rookies. Charlie Caveiro banged out three hits. But that was it for the Rookies. At 6-1, the Rookies still hold a one-game lead over East and West Kaua’i, however.
East Kaua’i did its part to keep pace with both teams, as it defeated the K-Makules 14-10 on Saturday.
Walter Silva picked up his fifth win, but benefitted from the help of Ronnie Holt in the last two innings. Tada Hashimoto took the loss, his first, for the K-Makules.
Alex Youn belted two home runs on three hits for East Kaua’i. both Silva and Les Kubo were 3-for-3 from the plate.
The K-Makules’ Doric Remata and “Pancho” DeCosta banged two-run homers and “Lefty” Remata went a perfect 4-for-4. Pairing hits for the K-Makules were Hetman Fraticelli and Hashimoto.
In Saturday’s other game, the Lihu’e A’s downed Kawaihau 22-6. Joe Brun picked up his third win of the second round. Kawaihau used three pitchers in the loss, but starter Ted Tamashiro picked up his second loss.
Lihu’e’s Tomo Hiranaka got a two-run homer on three hits. Dwight Fuji banged a two-run home run on three hits. Glenn Akina had a perfect 5-for-5 performance and Ismo Yoshishigi got three hits.
Kawaihau’s Alan Teves belted a two-run homer on two hits. Dan Boro ripped a solo dinger. Gene Hornet, Terry Pantohan and William Sasan all registered two hits.
Next weeks games will be played at Eleele Field.
