The County of Kaua’i boys’ 17-under basketball playoffs continued with three games Thursday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Top-seeded Waimea had little trouble with the Westside Boys in the second round, as it cruised to a 71-43 victory and a berth in Sunday’s 4 p.m. semifinal.
Winnie Arios’ 13 points led a balanced Waimea attack. Micah Bermoy scored 15 to lead the Westside Boys. The Boys fell into the loser’s bracket, and will face Team Faith Sunday at 5:15 p.m.
Northeast will be Waimea’s opponent in Sunday’s game. It got by the Red Dirt Boys with a 77-66 victory. Jeffery Giminez led Northeast with 20 points. Jesse Erese poured in 27 for Dirt.
The loss dropped Red Dirt into the losers’ bracket, where it will face Da Lows Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
In Thursday’s final game, Team Faith stayed alive in the playoffs with a 66-60 victory over the Sau Sai Boys.
Kaina Kaneokua led Faith with 15 points. Matt Miguel scored 23 for Sau Sai.
All games are played at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Chevron sponsoring coaches development
Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23, The Chevron and Hawai’i High School Athletic Association Coaches Development Program will be held at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel on Oahu.
Certified instructors from the National Federation of State High School Associations Coaches Education Program will conduct two seminars for school and club sport coaches:
Coaching Principles Course: Designed to address the essential elements of successful coaching, from proven coaching techniques to effective risk management.
Sports First Aid Course: Designed to teach school and club sport coaches how to be safe, capable and effective as first responders to injured athletes. Coaches will learn the basics of sports injuries; how to prepare for medical emergencies; how to recognize minor and serious injuries; and administering of appropriate first aid.
Coaches who pass the course exam will receive a diploma certifying successful completion and have their names entered into the National Coaches Registry.
The Coaches Principles Course will be held June 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Sports First Aid Course will be June 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Chevron is subsidizing a significant portion of the course fees: two-day cost is $60; one day is $40.
Seating is limited. Registration deadline is June 14.
