The Rookies began the second round of the Kaua’i Senior Citizens Softball League much like they ended the first, with a win.
Archie Fontanilla picked up his ninth win as the Rookies defeated West Kaua’i 18-10 Saturday, May 5, at Isenberg Field. West Kaua’i’s Joe Silva picked up the loss. In relief, Frank Bukoski was also hit hard, as the Rookies put their bats to work early and often.
Nellie Mendonca was 5-for-5 on the day. Ray Espino finished 4-for-4 and Walter Souza was 4-for-5. Fontanilla and Walter Sonda each notched three hits. West Kaua’i’s Boni Garma smacked two home runs on three hits and Mike Floster got three hits.
The Lihu’e A’s also started the second round right, crushing Kawaihau 14-3. Joe Brun threw an eight-hitter in the win, and Lihu’e got to Teddy Daligdig for 20 hits. Dwight Fujii got a two-run homer on three hits for Lihu’e.
The A’s also got a solo homer from Glen Akina and three hits from Chic Cacabalos and Ismo Yoshishigi. Kawaihau’s Dan Boro knocked a home run on three hits and Willie Sasan recorded two hits. In Saturday’s final game, East Kaua’i stuck it to the K-Makules, 13-6. Walter Silva got his sixth win for East Kaua’i.
Meanwhile, the K-Makules used three pitchers to try and slow the East Kaua’i attack; Ben Callejo was charged with the loss. East Kaua’i’s Les Kubo got three hits. Alex Youn had two.
“Pancho” DeCosta d a solo home run, while Ben Pescadur was 3-for-3 for the K-Makules. Pairing hits for the K-Makules were Herman Fechicelli, Doric ReMata, Buddy Kanoa and Marvin Perry. May 12 games will be played at Isenberg Field beginning at 8:30 a.m. In the first contest, the Lihu’e A’s will take on West Kaua’i. Then it’s East Kaua’i against Kawaihau, followed finally by The Rookies vs. K-Makules.
