Risun Kohatsu
Risun Kohatsu, of Kalaheo, Kauai, died at his home on March. 21, 2001, at the age of 85.
Born in Lawai, Kauai on Jan. 18, 1916, he was a retired maintenance man with the State of Hawaii, Hanapepe Library.
He is survived by: one son: Gilbert Kohatsu of Los Angeles, Calif., one daughter: Maizie Kohatsu of Los Angeles, Calif., four brothers: Risei (Rose) Kohatsu, Kazuo (Jean) Kohatsu, Dickie (Kikue) Kohatsu, and Nobu (Sally) Kohatsu, all of Honolulu, O’ahu; one sister: Tsuruko Kohatsu of Honolulu, O’ahu; numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were private. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Asatomo Akaji
Asatomo Akaji of Lawai, Kauai, died at his home on March 19, 2001, at the age of 77.
Born in Koloa, Kauai on March 30, 1923, he was the proprietor of Akaji Manju Store.
He is survived by: two brothers: Bumpei (Toyoko) Akaji of McCully, O’ahu and Steven (Elaine) Akaji of Honolulu, O’ahu; two sisters: Bernice Osborne of Sunset Beach, O’ahu and Suzue Shimamoto of Honolulu, O’ahu; numerous nieces and nephews.
Service were private. Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Kiichi Yamashiro
Kiichi “Yama” Yamashiro, of Waimea, Kauai, died at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital on March 19, 2001, at the age of 98.
Born in Makaweli, Kauai on April 8, 1903, he was a retired Shift Supervisor with Kekaha Sugar Co.
He is survived by: his wife: Michie Yamashiro of Waimea, Kauai; three daughters: Helene (Philip) Yamagata of Kapa’a, Kaua’i, Ann (Michael) Suzuki of Pukalani, Maui, and Gail (Mark) Fewel of Yorbalinda, Calif.; six grandchildren; two brothers: Sadamu (Michiko) Yamashiro of Waimea, Kauai and Sakae (Mae) Yamashiro of Honolulu, O’ahu; one sister: Kikue of California; numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were private. Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Shiro Nakamura
Shiro Nakamura, of Lihu’e, Kaua’i, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on March 19, 2001, at the age of 88.
Born in Waipahu, O’ahu on May 2, 1912, he was a retired Iron worker with Hawaiian Reinforcing Steel Co.
He is survived by: his wife: Grace Nakamura of Lihu’e, Kaua’i; one son: Steven (Kathleen Oda) Nakamura of Kaimuki, O’ahu; one daughter: Sandie (Dennis) Fujimoto of Lihu’e, Kaua’i; five grandchildren; one sister: Kiyo Minagawa of Waipahu, O’ahu; numerous nieces, and nephews.
Services were private. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Alejandrino Pillos
Alejandrino Balagat Pillos of Puhi, Kaua’i, died March 25, 2001, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, at the age of 65.
A laborer for Lihu’e Plantation, he was born Oct. 20, 1936, in the Philippines.
He is survived by his wife: Beatriz Munoz Pillos of Puhi; three daughters: Hermenia (Virgilio) Balilea of Kapa’a, Marjorie (Ray) Ramos, Sr. of Hanama’ulu, and Rosemary (Gerry) Pasion, of Lihu’e; one son: Roger (Delia) Pillos of Puhi; mother: Pelagia Pillos of the Philippines; one brother: Conrado (Maria) Pillos of Puhi; one sister: Caridad (Jesus) Taylan of Puhi; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, March 29, at the family’s home at 1982 Nahema St. in Puhi from 2 p.m. The body will remain overnight with the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Visitation is again scheduled for Friday, March 30, at immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia from 9 a.m. with Mass to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Father Alex. Burial to follow at Lihu’e Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suiggested. Arrangements arebeing handled by Borthwick/Kaua’i Mortuary.
Peter R. Soto Sr.
Peter R. Soto, Sr. of Wailua Homesteads, died at his home on March 26, 2001, at the age of 85.
Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico on Aug. 1, 1915, he was 85 years of age at the time of his death. Mr. Soto was a retired School Custodian with San Mateo County Public School.
He is survived by: his wife: Rose Soto of Wailua Homesteads, Kaua’i; two sons: Peter Soto, Jr. of Fremont, Calif. and James E. Soto of Fremont, Calif.; two daughters: Margie (Ben) Castillo of ‘Ele’ele, Kaua’i and Ruth (William) Schafer of Redmond, Wash.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother: Henio (Dolores) Soto of Kalaheo, Kaua’i and three siters: Virginia (John) Ortiz of Numila, Kaua’i, Emma Freitas of Kalaheo, Kaua’i, and Marie Rivera of Hayward, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit the family at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 2, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church; Mass officiated by Father Keahi will begin at 11 a.m. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.

Sakae Shimomura
Sakae Shimomura of Wainiha, Kaua’i, died Feb. 18, 2001, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 84.
A carpenter, he was born March 19, 1916.
He is survived by his caregiver and niece, Cathy (Bundy) Ham Young of Waimea; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Services are scheduled for Saturday, April 7, at noon at the Black Pot Beach in Hanalei. Inurnment to follow at a later date.
Casual attire is sugested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick/Kaua’i Mortuary.
