Kaua’i County has closed one of two comfort stations at Po’ipu Beach Park for the past four days due to a malfunctioning septic tank pump.
The rest room was closed after the system shut down and an alarm went off Friday, preventing treated waste from being sent to a leaching field at the park, said Mel Nishihara, who heads the county’s Parks and Recreation Division.
The south Kaua’i park is a popular site for residents and visitors. Because people were able to use the other comfort station at the park, there weren’t any problems, Nishihara said.
Until the replacement part arrives, the downed comfort station will remain closed, he said.
If there is a long-term closure, portable toilets could be placed at the park to support the functioning rest stop, Nishihara said.
