The chairwoman of George W. Bush’s campaign organization in Hawai’i said yesterday’s court order of a manual recount of votes in Florida’s presidential election was “political.” Barbara Marumoto also expressed hope that an appeal of the Florida Supreme Court decision will result in Bush becoming the next president.
The court’s ruling reversed a lower court’s decision that was based on “sound facts,” Marumoto said. She said the four Supreme Court justices who outvoted a three-justice minority sent “a clear signal that this decision was more political than judicial.” Democratic Party and Al Gore campaign officials in Hawai’i couldn’t be reached for comment.
