administration lose its focus on putting America at the forefront of helping
poorer countries. The latest assistance is $435 million in foreign aid to
forgive debts of countries that should now direct their resources to fighting
poverty and disease. Most of the money authorized through Clinton and Congress
will be spent on fighting AIDS worldwide. In return, the U.S. can benefit from
stabilized nations and improved markets for American goods overseas.
The
International Monetary Fund has a goal of debt relief for 20 of the world’s
poorest countries by the end of this year. With Clinton’s backing, America has
an eminent role in that mission and overall humanitarianism globally.
