Mahalo for the terrific story regarding Gurudeva’s receiving the U.N. peace
prize (Oct. 9, “Kaua’i Hindu leader is a world hero”). How nice to see a
community resident chosen for such an outstanding honor. How great for all of
us, but especially young people, to realize that some of the most important
contributions are made not on the football field, not in the bright lights, but
in the quiet strength of character in a human heart.
It never fails to
amaze and inspire me to see what a difference a single human being can make in
their lifetime – and how whole communities can benefit from it. His efforts to
bring understanding and respect for diversity of cultures have been rightly
effective.
His vision has been that we are all Kauaians, incorporating all
the richness of our varied cultural, ethnic and traditional heritages – and
that Kaua’i is richer for having this multicultural treasure chest of talents,
ideas, skills and sensitivities. When we all work together, we can benefit from
each other’s resources.
A popular saying from radio is that “We may have
all gotten here in different canoes, but we’re in the same boat now.”
Gurudeva’s efforts to promote a sustainable future for all Kaua’i residents,
not just Hindus, helps us to recognize that we are all in this
together.
The lifetime efforts of Gurudeva and the Hindu monastery to
promote peace for all people does more to publicize the true nature of Kaua’i
than all the advertising in the world. We are fortunate to have this remarkable
person living quietly, but effectively, among us.
How blessed to be
Kauaian.
