It is interesting how the same news can be interpreted in such a disparate
fashion. Your editorial (Aug. 23, “A good sign: Students favoring gun control”)
lauded the fact that 90 percent of high school kids are in favor of gun control
as a sign that society is improving. I see the same report as indicative of the
level of brainwashing imposed on our young in schools where the curriculum is
controlled by the NEA and other advocates of big government.
As noted
elsewhere in the same edition, giving up our freedom to self-defense does not
make North Shore residents any less susceptible to rape and robbery-perhaps
more so, since the police can not be bothered to put any more than 30 officers
(10 per shift) on patrol while the rest do paperwork or whatever. Would
potentially armed victims make the bad guy think twice? Not always, but maybe
sometimes.
Another story noted that the mayors and lawyers who are busy
suing (and defaming) the gun manufacturers are demanding free TV time to answer
paid TV ads pointing out that it is easier to blame guns (or knives, spray
paint, matches, etc.) rather than actually trying to stop crime by chasing and
punishing criminals.
Free speech by greedy lawyers and politicians is
okay, but must be stopped for gun manufacturers or anyone else who advocates
personal responsibility.
