Planners hear from economist
LIHU’E — A leading Hawaiian economist and field trips to local businesses will be part of the Hawai’i Congress of Planning Officials Conference Aug. 30-Sept. 1 at the Sheraton Kaua’i Resort.
About 200 people are expected to attend the event, which will include a presentation by Paul Brewbaker, chief economist for Bank of Hawai’i.
The conference will also offer a visit to the Kaua’i Coffee mill.
LA station does remote shows
HANALEI — A Los Angeles, Calif. radio station broadcasted live from Hanalei Bay Resort this week as part of a special promotion.
During shows Aug. 14-15, KTVW 94.7 on-air personality Talaya Trigueros interviewed Kaua’i County Mayor Maryanne Kusaka and Sue Kanoho, executive director of Kaua’i Visitors Bureau. Resort information also was reported.
The station was doing an annual promotion in which it and Hawaiian Airlines gives its listeners trips to Hawai’i .
Papaya makes 45 percent gain
HONOLULU — Of the nearly 4.7 million pounds of fresh papaya produced in Hawai’i in July, 240,000 pounds came from Kaua’i, according to the state Department of Agriculture.
The statewide yield was 45 percent higher than the same month in 1999. Officials attributed much of the increase to disease-resistant plants.
TGI’s owner buys three papers
SELMA, Calif. — Pulitzer Inc., owner of The Garden Island, has purchased three publications in California from Community Newspapers Inc.
Changing hands are the Selma Enterprise in Selma, the Kingsburg Recorder in Kingsburg and a free advertising paper, the South County News. Their total circulation is 31,125.
James Brock, president of Community Newspapers, said the firm decided to sell the papers to Pulitzer because “we wanted a company that produced quality newspapers and has a reputation for good employee relations.”
Cost-U-Less has new officers
PRESTON, Wash. — Cost-U-Less Inc., whose 12 stores include one on Kaua’i, plans to improve store operations and identify new markets for expansion, the company announced in conjunction with promotions of two key officers.
Promoting Roy Sorensen to chief operating officer and Martin Moore to chief financial officer supports the improvements and expansion that lie ahead, said J. Jeffrey Meder, president.
Cost-U-Less operates non-membership, club-style warehouse stores.
State tourism contract given
HONOLULU — The Hawai’i Tourism Authority has awarded a one-year management and marketing contract to TEAM Unlimited.
TEAM will develop a plan for annual statewide marketing events and research, support and manage such events.
Broadband firm unveils web page
LIHU’E—HSA Kaua’i has unveiled its new web page (hsa-kauai.net) featuring national news via Fox News.com, web-based e-mail and a high-speed newsletter.
The page allows Kaua’i customers of the broadband communications company to check their e-mail accounts from any Internet connection in the world.
