Local control needed for island’s energy

The basis of providing solutions to many of our problems is well within the capacity of our community. This capacity has been well illustrated in the unique opportunity presented to us by the Kaua’i Island Utility Co-op board in their bid to acquire Citizens Utilities, Kaua’i Electric Division.

Exploring alternative renewable energy sources like solar power and conservation measures are good ideas, but are not easily explored through the resources of a for-profit business because of the expected demand from stockholders for a higher return on their investment. With local control will come long-term energy solutions that can be tailored to fit the needs of our community.

We also need to take heed that “pessimism, paraded by a minority under the banner of ‘realism,’ invites paralysis at all levels of our community.”
