As has been reported in this paper (“Death in hotel ruled natural,” July 27), my family recently lost a son and brother, Stephen Borgardus.
Unfortunately, my brother’s death has been used by some, also as reported in this paper, as an indictment of the Hawaiian Medicaid system. My family regrets this characterization. My brother lived for many years beyond the original medical prognosis because of the generosity of the Medicaid system and the generosity and effort of other Hawaiian state and private agencies.
Stephen had a deep feeling of compassion for the culture, history and people of Hawai’i. It is very comforting to his family that this compassion was given back to him many times over.
We certainly would like to thank all of the people of Hawai’i who have provided-first to Stephen, and now to his family-such comfort and assistance in the direst of times.
