PO’IPU-In a way, finishing second could be the same as winning for Ernie
Els.
The South African, who has finished second in the three major men’s
professional golf tournaments this year, is a runaway leader for the first
alternate spot in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf scheduled for Nov. 21-22 at
Kaua’i’s Po’ipu Bay Resort.
Tiger Woods’ victories in the U.S. Open and
British Open opens the four-man Grand Slam field to the top non-winning
point-getter in the majors. Should Woods also win the final major, the PGA
Championship, the fourth Grand Slam spot would go to the player with the
second-highest point total. At this juncture, it’s Tom Lehman with 205 points.
Fred Couples is third with 195 points.
The bad news for the Grand Slam
participants is that Woods has won the 36-hole match-play tournament the last
three years.
