To the Forum:I am writing to you to express my shock at the great
injustice done by the Humane Society Board in firing Humane Society Director,
Sherry Hoe, an injustice not only to Ms. Hoe, and to the highly dedicated
Humane Society Staff, but most especially to the defenseless dogs and cats of
Kaua’i.
Last summer I worked with Sherry, Julia and other wonderful staff
members transporting and finding homes for a few dogs under the Angel Rescue
Program. Much loved, Beauty, is still with me. Rocco found a home with my vet,
who is never without him. Molly and Scubie live with one of my daughter’s
college teachers. These are just a few dogs who would have been put to death
without the most dedicated staff of any Humane Society I have ever
encountered.
How could the Board have fired someone whose work and motives
are as fine? They should be giving her special recognition for her outstanding
and unselfish work. The staff walkout is powerful testimony to Sherry’s passion
and dedication.
I can only believe that she was fired because of private
veterinarians’ worry that they might lose a bit of business to the Humane
Society. Surely they can compete. Honolulu and mainland vets are not
complaining of low cost spay neuter clinics, but welcome the help in
controlling the number of unwanted animals. A spay neuter clinic is long
overdue on Kaua’i where there has been for quite some time a surprisingly large
number of unwanted dogs and cats.
Sherry deserves a St. Francis medal for
her concern for animals. She is clearly an inspiration to an equally dedicated
and passionate staff.
