West Kaua’i climbs to 2-0 in seniors softball

KAUMAKANI – West Kaua’i moved to 2-0 and East Kaua’i won its season-opening

game last Saturday in the Kaua’i Seniors Softball League at the Kaumakani

Field.

West Kaua’i rallied big late in the game to belt the Lihu’e A’s

16-6, while East Kaua’i scored a 12-1 victory over Kawaihau.

In another

game, the Rookies stopped the K-Makules 17-5.

West Kaua’i 16, Lihu’e

It was a tight game through six innings with West Kaua’i leading just

7-5.

In the top of the seventh, West Kaua’i scored nine times to score the

eventual 16-6 win.

Joe Silva was the winning pitcher and Tomo Hiranaka took

the loss.

Danny Manus banged a three-run homer for the winners, while

Blondie Carveiro got three hits.

Pat Pavao, playing in his first game, was

walked three times.

Every West Kaua’i player in the lineup got at least one

hit.

Hank Nishikawa led the A’s with three hits, while Glen Akina, Joe

Munechika, John Ochoco and Hiranaka all swatted two hits.

East Kaua’i

12, Kawaihau 1

Walter Silva hurled an eight-hitter for East Kaua’i in

holding the Eastside rivals to just one run.

Alex Youn banged out two home

runs in his 3-for-3 performance, while teammates Ed Bales and John Garcia hit

solo homers for the winners.

Terry Pantohan, Jose Yadao and Domingo Laranio

all collected two hits.

Rookies 17, K-Makules 5

Archie Fontanilla

went the distance for the victory, while Dado Paiste took the loss.

Nellie

Mendonca slammed a two-run homer and finished with three hits for the Rookies.

Wally Sonoda, Dickie Sialana and Doric Remata all connected for three

hits.

Next Games

Three games will be held at the ‘Ele’ele Field

this Saturday.

The K-Makules (0-1) take on Kawaihau (0-2) at 9:15

a.m.

The Rookies (1-1) and the Lihu’e A’s (1-1) follow at 10:15 a.m., while

West Kaua’i (2-0) battles East Kaua’i (1-0) at 11:15 a.m. in a first place

battle.
