KOLOA — Sixth-graders Tasha Prem and Nick Wells, representing the Koloa School
Student Council, recently presented Parent Teacher Student Association
President Anthony Cruz with a $500 donation for the PTSA Playground
Fund-raising Drive. Funds were raised over the past year by aluminum recycling
and other efforts.
For those who are not aware of the situation, Koloa
Elementary School and other public and private schools on the island have no
playgrounds at this time, as what once was considered safe equipment has now
been deemed a liability risk and hence declared off-limits to
students.
Much of the equipment also does not meet Americans with
Disabilities Act specifications to allow access by wheelchair-bound and other
disabled people.
The state Department of Education has no plans to replace
the condemned equipment.
Hence, the Koloa Elementary School PTSA is
reaching out to the community in its efforts to provide a playground for the
children. Donations are gratefully accepted at the school, said a PTSA
spokesperson. Tax-deductible checks can be made payable to the Koloa School
PTSA.
