Batters come alive in 9-1 and 23-14 victories
LIHU’E — The turnaround is
almost complete.
Waimea High School, once the dominant softball team in the
Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation, is almost there again.
During the past
few years, the Menehunes had fallen on lean times.
The lean times appear to
be over after Waimea’s 9-1 and 23-14 doubleheader sweep over the Kaua’i Red
Raiders on Saturday at Isenberg Field.
Waimea is now 3-0, a record that
includes an opening-game 7-0 victory over the defending champion Kapa’a
Warriors last Wednesday.
Waimea 9, Kaua’i 1
Erica Iwai’s triple helped
lead the Menehunes to a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
The modest lead held
up until the fourth when Kaua’i tied it on Sarah Yoshikawa’s bases loaded
walk.
The Menehunes busted loose for five runs in the fifth to take the
game away. Albette Nawai, Breanne Baptista and Trishtan Nakata had hits in the
inning, while Erin Castillo helped out with a sacrifice fly.
Nakata and
Robyn Hoopii-Manuel finished with two hits each in the game for
Waimea.
Alisa Racelo, Bailey Azeka, Shannon Perreira and Tyrene Kaluahine
had Kaua’i High’s four hits in the game against the Waimea pitching duo of
Nawai and Bridget Louis.
Waimea 23, Kaua’i 14
Iwai’s first inning grand
slam was a foreshadowing of the complete offensive explosion to come.
Along
with the grand slam, Iwai finished with two triples, a single and eight
RBI.
Waimea grabbed an early 9-2 lead, but the Red Raiders scored eight
runs in the third and two more in the fourth for a temporary 12-9 edge.
The
Menehunes closed with four runs in the fifth, seven in the sixth and three in
the seventh to wrap up the victory.
Other leading batters for the Menehunes
in the game were Baptista with a solo homer and a single and Shanelle DePeralta
with a pair of hits.
Once again, Kaua’i High was limited to four hits, one
each by Pua Kaluahine, Liza Gebauer, Shannon Perreira and Tyrene
Kalauhine.
Pua Kaluahine drove in two of the Raiders’ runs.

Tomorrow, the Kapa’a Warriors host the Kaua’i Red Raiders at the
Kapa’a Ball Park at 2:45 p.m.
On Saturday, the Menehunes return to action
at the Kapa’a Ball Park against the Warriors for a noon doubleheader.
