Residents and visitors are invited to get a head start on their Christmas shopping at the annual Christmas Craft Fair & Art Sale on Saturday Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kilauea Point. This is one of the few days out of the year that the Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge are open free to the public.
The Kilauea Point Natural History Association and the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge staff and volunteers are co-hosting the event to promote and provide exposure for artists who depict wildlife and natural history subjects.
Special guests, Patrick Ching, Katherine Orr, and Mauliola Cook, will be doing book signings. Ching will also be holding wildlife drawing classes at 11 a.m., l p.m. and 3 p.m.
Patrick Ching is a renowned nature artist who was born and raised in Hawai’i. He lived and worked at the Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge from 1987 until 1992, and has spent a good part of his life exploring remote areas of the islands, getting to know intimately the creatures and places that inspire his work. Ching attended Leeward Community College, the Academy of Arts, and Otis/Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. Among his biggest accomplishments were a one man show in Governor Waihee’s office in 1987, and Hawaii’s first Wildlife Conservation Stamp featuring the Hawai’i state bird, the nene (goose), at Hanalei Valley. In 1996 with the help of many friends, Patrick opened Naturally Hawaiian Gallery and Gifts in Waimanalo. Ching’s artistry has been featured in various newspapers and television shows and in several local and national magazines, including Wildlife Art News, Audubon, and Birders World.
Katherine Orr has authored and illustrated more than a dozen books, mostly for children including the Discover Hawaii series. She has also contributed articles to professional scientific journals and popular magazines. Orr holds a B.A. in biology and a M.S. in marine zoology and has received grants for her work in environmental education from the World Wildlife Fund, and Rare Animal Relief Effort. Her work has been translated into several languages for use in the Caribbean and Pacific.
Now living in Honolulu, Katherine says, “When I write for children, I’m really writing for all ages. I write books out of a desire to communicate my love of nature to others, and that love of nature should begin when we are young.” Kauai resident, Mauliola Cook co-authored a book with Katherine Orr in the Discover Hawaii series about volcanos entitled: Hawaii’s Birth by Fire.
Other publications include Na Mele Hula for which she was the editor, translator and researcher, and The Art of the Hula as Seen in the Dance of ‘Iolani Luahine. For the past 10 years she has taught Hawaiian Studies to public and private school children in grades K-8. Cook holds a B.A. in French and an M.F.A. in Modern Dance and has taught Creative Movement and Dance to all ages throughout the islands. For several years she was also the choreographer for Hula Ki’i which performed puppet dance-dramas in public, private and Hawaiian immersion schools and community centers around the state.
