KAPAA — The first sale at The Buttery was, oddly enough, not something out of the ovens.
Instead, the governor’s Kauai liason, Wanda Kau-Shibata, acquired a fabric shopping bag that lined one of the counters in the shop in the Roxy Square in Kapaa.
“It’ll make a nice Christmas present for someone,” Kau-Shibata said Thursday while waiting in line for the qiche being served up by Jade Brooks, one of the owners of the bakery.
“I’ve also got some baked goods to share back at the office.”
Brooks and Smazana “Biba” Velickovic share ownership of the bakery described as a “European Dessert Parlour and Cafe” in the Roxy Square at 4-1345 Kuhio Highway, Suite B-1. The bakery is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
“All the recipes of the items were things Biba grew up with,” said Anna Velickovic, Biba’s mom, visiting from California. “We’re Slavic and Biba’s grandmother used to make a lot of these things she grew up with.”
In addition to the European-inspired delicacies, Anna said they imported different teas to go with the Buttery kitchen offerings.
Randall Francisco, president of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce, was pleased with the overflow crowd that turned out for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“Businesses need to support each other to make everything work,” Francisco said.
Next on the Kauai Chamber of Commerce calendar is the second-quarter membership meeting on Tuesday starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort.
