LIHUE – To improve access to public services, the county recently began making modifications to the parking lot at the Lihue Civic Center.
The work, which consists of several concurrent projects that follow the LCC master plan, is expected to be completed by the end of January 2014.
One of the projects, which will create additional parking on Eiwa Street and serve as overflow parking while the rest of the LCC improvements are being worked on, might impact traffic in the area.
Starting July 15, Eiwa Street will be closed at the Rice Street junction and no through traffic will be allowed on Eiwa Street.
However, the public will still be able to access the Lihue Civic Center, Historic County Building, Kauai Museum, and State Office Building via the Hardy and Eiwa streets junction.
While the work is underway, motorists are advised to use extra caution in the area and to observe the speed limit and all posted signs.
Other enhancements scheduled to be implemented at the Lihue Civic Center by early next year include the following:
• The LCC’s Rice Street egress will be changed so that it lines up with Kele Street and a crosswalk will be added that will link the Lihue Civic Center with the Lihue Post Office.
• ADA improvements – additional parking spaces and walkways that include connections to Hardy and Umi streets as well as bus stops.
Recently, 31 parking spaces were added next to the old Big Save loading dock.
