LIHUE — Every year, the Kauai Retired Seniors Volunteer Program takes on a service project in recognition of the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.
For 2013, the Kauai RSVP is coordinating a collection of supplies for homebound seniors and helping them to assemble their own emergency supply kits.
Among the items being collected are: bottled water; canned foods such as Vienna sausages, SPAM and sardines; flashlights with batteries; quart-size containers or bags; adhesive bandages; alcohol hand wipes and small bottles of hand sanitizers.
The emergency supplies can be dropped off through Sept. 9 at the Agency on Elderly Affairs during normal business hours. AEA’s office is at the Lihue Civic Center, Piikoi Building, Suite 330.
RSVP volunteers will sort the collected items and the AEA staff will deliver them on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11 to clients that need them.
In 2009, Congress designated Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with helping to support this effort across the country.
For the upcoming anniversary, CNCS is working with numerous organizations to implement one of the largest days of charitable service in U.S. history.
